Brief synopsis:
Overwhelm Gessho before he overwhelms you

Yeah okay. A lot of people trash talk ToAU for being too easy. This mission is the breaking point - everything from here on out is pretty darn tough so you would be wise to start taking it at least a little seriously. I don’t mean you have to go out and buy a bunch of vile-elixers for this fight or anything, but having a well-thought out strategy and working as a unit with your team is going to do you a world of good.

If you got the cutscene immediately before this mission you will be warped right to where you need to go. If you left that area, or lost the mission and need to come back, make your way to the Rock Slab. It’s the same slab as in the Corsair unlock quest.

Your opponent is Gessho. Yeah, that yagudo ninja. This is sort of the “wait, what?” moment of ToAU, similar to CoP mission 7-5. Though I guess that was more of a weird plot twist than this is. Personally, I always knew this guy was up to no good. I mean, look at those beady read eyes! And he’s a beastmen! Never trust someone who’s not a child of Altana!

I digress.

Apart from a lot of strangely named weak TP moves, Gessho has two main tricks. One is his ninja 2-hour, Mijin Gakure, does AoE damage to everyone nearby and, of course, doesn’t actually kill him. He can use this move at any given time and more than once, but in the runs I went on he did he once when he was lowish on life.

The second trick is that he can spawn multiple copies of himself at once.  Again, he can do this more than once, again he can do it at any random point in the fight. These mobs are also named Gessho but will be at full HPs. They despawn in decently short order, about 15 seconds, but can wreck absolute havok during that time if allowed to beat on someone. The clones will also use a TP move whenever the real Gessho does, though not all the same move.

The clones all attack whomever had hate on Gessho when he spawned them. The best way to handle the clones is to have someone designated with an AoE ability (such as diaga or a blue mage move) AoE the lot of them and run away. The clones will all follow that person and leave the rest of the party alone.

Gessho gives up at low HP, around 15%. But that’s most of his life bar so you have to do most of the work yourself.

Okay okay, I admit it, I went in and won this battle on my first try so I don’t really know too much about his behavior. I saw the clones be kited and I saw a Mijin but neither killed us. I should probably go back there and pay more attention at some point.

Gessho Move List:

Move
Effect
Hane Fubuki
Damage + poison
Hiden Sokyaku
Damage + knockback
Shibaraku
AoE damage + stun
About 550 damage

Will use a TP move when Gessho does
Despawn in about 15 seconds
Mijin Gakure
Gessho's 2-hour
Does damage based on hit points
Plan for 700+ damage

Strategy tips:

Low-manning Legacy of the Lost

Don’t. You might occasionally hear some awesome story about a party with five beating him, but you don’t hear the numerous stories of parties trying that and dying. I’m only including this section to say that it is no longer a feasible option unless I start hearing some really great strategies. I won’t even include it for the remainder of the missions.
